How to think about affordability

"Can I afford the monthly payment?" is the wrong question. A better one: "Can I afford the total commitment, including what happens at the end?"

With PCP, a £250/month payment might be financing a £25,000 car with a £10,000 balloon at the end. You can "afford" the monthly — but can you afford the balloon? If not, you're locked into handing the car back or rolling into a new deal. That's not ownership, it's renting.

Budget brackets — what they actually buy

The total ownership cost

Your monthly finance payment is only part of the cost. Before committing, add:

  • Insurance — average £77/month (ABI 2025). Varies wildly by age, location, car group.
  • Fuel / charging — £100–£200/month for petrol/diesel, £30–£80 for EV.
  • Road tax — £0 to £190/year depending on the car.
  • Maintenance — £50–£100/month budget for a used car; less for new with warranty.

A £300/month finance payment often means £500–£600/month total running cost. Build the full picture before deciding.
